There is now only one El Grande Americano.
The second El Grande Americano defeated the Original Americano in a Mask vs. Mask match Saturday at AAA Noche de los Grandes, with the Original later unmasking and being revealed as Chad Gable.
The emotional bout went over 30 minutes and featured several callbacks to their long-running feud, including appearances from Alexis Arroyo and Pimpinela Escarlata, both of whom had been attacked by the Original Americano earlier in the rivalry. Andrea Bazarte, the second Americano’s girlfriend, also appeared in the crowd despite the Original only agreeing to the match under the condition that she be fired from AAA.
In the closing moments, the bloodied Original attacked Americano’s knee with a steel chair and attempted to apply the ankle lock, but Americano fought free and hit his running headbutt to secure the victory.
After the match, Original Americano told the crowd he put on the mask to prove how much he hated lucha libre and luchadors, but admitted he could not overcome the Mexican spirit. He then unmasked as Chad Gable, reflected on his career, introduced his family and said he would return to AAA someday. Fans chanted “thank you Gable” as he handed the mask to Americano.
