Sad news has come to the wrestling community this morning as former WWF and WCW enhancement talent Chuck Coates has passed away. His wife shared the announcement on social media, confirming his passing after a difficult recent battle with health issues.
“This is not a post I ever thought I’d have to make. My wonderful husband Chuck Coates took his last breath on earth and his first breath in Heaven at 3:44 a.m. while I held his hand. Please pray for our family as we navigate the days ahead.“
Coates, who trained under legendary Mid-Atlantic standout Nelson Royal, made his professional wrestling debut in 1989 for the WWF. His first appearance came when he teamed with Paul Roma in a match against the imposing duo of Andre the Giant and Haku. Shortly after, he became a fixture in South Atlantic Pro Wrestling, teaming with Chuck Smith (better known to fans as Helmut Hessler) under the team name The German Storm Troopers.
Beyond his time on the national stage, Coates worked extensively across the independent scene, including appearances for OMEGA, the promotion founded by Matt and Jeff Hardy. He was known to be especially close with the Hardy family, forging lifelong friendships during that era.
In addition to his wrestling career, Coates’ story was one of resilience. He was a three-time cancer survivor, courageously overcoming the disease on multiple occasions. Most recently, he had been hospitalized with severe heart problems and, according to his wife, underwent four surgeries over the past week before his passing.
Pro Wrestling Wire extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Chuck Coates during this difficult time.
On a personal note, I had the opportunity to sit down with Chuck this past May for an interview reflecting on his career. He was warm, gracious, and eager to share stories about his time in the business — including memories of Kurt Angle, the Hardy Boys, Steve Austin, and many others. His passion for wrestling and the friendships he built along the way will not be forgotten.
