Heatwave kicked off with a 10 bell salute to the legendary Hulk Hogan and Ozzy Osbourne, two creative giants who influenced not only wrestling but the world as a whole for decades.
Match One:
No Disqualification Grudge Match
Josh Jade Defeated JC Grunge Via Pinfall
After a rather technical yet violent start, things went hardcore with the introduction of various weapons including a barbed wire wrapped bat and a kendo stick. Josh Jade dropped JC with a DDT onto a steel chair and eventually won with a cutter to pick up the victory. After the match, Grunge announced that after 26 years he will be retiring from in-ring competition. He added that he was grateful to have his last match against a close friend that he had his first match ever with, bringing his career full circle. The entire locker room came out and embraced Grunge, showing their love and respect for the hardcore icon. We here at WVWF would like to say thank you JC, for everything you have given to us and the wrestling business itself.
Match Two
WVWF Tag Team Championship Tournament Match:
Cease and Desist (‘Hypeman’ Dan Lasers and ‘The Rare Bird’ Chris Phoenix) With Judo Jones Defeated Damnation (Chase Maddox and Blood Beast With Amon) Via Pinfall
Phoenix and Blood Beast started this match fighting in the classic battle of speed versus power. Damnation gave Lasers consecutive sentons for a near fall. Amon tried to help his team, getting into fights with Judo Jones and Dan Lasers, but his distractions were not enough to derail Cease and Desist. While Dan and Blood Beast were fighting on the outside, Phoenix hit a Swanton onto Maddox to advance Cease and Desist within the tag team tournament. After the match, Damnation laid out their adversaries, claiming things were not over.
Match Three
USWA Universal Championship Match:
TauFau (Champion) vs ‘Brutal’ Ben Metal Ended in a No Contest
TauFua lit up Ben with chops, which the sadistic Metal was more than happy to return. In an amazing sequence, Metal wrapped his entire body around TauFua’s arm, but the resilient champion overpowered him, lifting Ben up and then dropping him down with one arm. Metal switched up his strategy and tried to ground TauFua with a modified figure four, showing off his ring IQ and highly advanced submission skills. Right in the middle of the action, the suspended Ryan Steel came in and hit both men with a steel chair forcing the referee to deem this match a no contest. After the match, Dae and Am-Po from The Collective offered TaFua a Collective t-shirt and told him to think about it. The crowd loudly told the champion he should join.
Ryan Steel grabbed Tyler Strategious, demanding that he be reinstated. WVWF GM Lester made his return, donning a shirt saying ‘the mouth of WV’, to settle the situation. Lester demanded Steel never put his hands on Tyler and Tyler never instigate Steel again. Both men agreed to this and Steel was reinstated with the caveat that Ryan will not be able to challenge for a championship match until Lester “sees fit”.
Rikku St Helen came out and recapped the pain and betrayal she had endured at the last show. She proceeded to call out the WVWF Women’s Champion Jayde Mae, but got Wyatt Black and her father Carl instead. While Carl was explaining his shocking actions, Jayde came out of nowhere and the three began to attack St. Helen. Luckily, Cease and Desist saved St. Helen from any further damage and then challenged them to a six person mixed tag match.
Brock Hudson came out for the third time to ask Wildcat to be his tag partner and join the tag team tournament. After asking the crowd and his wife Paula what he should do, Wildcat surprisingly went against everybody’s wishes and decided to team with Brock instead. This unpopular decision enraged his wife to the point where she ended up striking both men below the belt before leaving the ring.
Match Four
WVWF Tag Team Championship Tournament Match:
The Collective (‘Psycho Killa’ Dae Jamison and Am-Po The Destroya) Defeated Allen Platinum and Michael Everything (With the Low Lifes) Via Pinfall
While The Collective were awaiting their unknown opponents, it was soon revealed that they would be facing Allen Platinum and the returning (and undefeated) Michael Everything. Once the bell rang, a fired up day Jamison locked up with a very motivated Allen, showing the importance of this match and the chance to become tag team champion. Everything chopped Dae and took a vicious cannonball in the corner from Am-Po, shaking off a lot of the proverbial ring rust. After being knocked down to the mat, Platinum crawled over and tried to tag in his partner, but Everything jumped down and refused to enter the match. This confusing turn of events left Allen open for The Collective to hit their running knee/ swinging power slam combination they call ‘Critical Damage’, which was damaging enough for The Collective to advance in the tournament. After the match, Michael and The Low Lifes attacked Allen, yelling that Allen deserved this for leaving them to join Damnation.
Match Five:
The ‘Fabolous’ Phoebe Harper Defeated ‘The Gentlemen of Exquisite Caliber’ Godrick Sandwell Via Pinfall
The two familiar foes decided to compete instead of talking. This time Godrick was a little less reluctant to wrestle Harper, but was still obviously holding back his aggression. Phoebe goaded the gentleman with vicious and creative offense, but was still not able to achieve her desired goals of breaking Godrick. Throughout the match, every time Godrick tried to plead with her to stop he was met with a slap in the face. After being pushed too far, Sandwell struck her twice and dropped her with his AA called ‘Hit The Books’ for a very close fall. Learning from his past mistakes, Sandwell attempted to capitalize by picking her up again, but visibly hesitated and started to put her back down. This slight hesitation gave Phoebe the opening to reverse the momentum and roll up the gentleman for the win.
Match Six
Six Man Tag:
The Institute (WVWF Heavyweight Champion Aaron James, ‘Controversy King’ Wyatt Black and ‘The Chemical Valley Gunslinger’ James Enoch) Defeated ‘Outlaw For Hire’ Nate Steel. ‘The Emperor’ Tony Sane and Damian Abel Via Pinfall
The Institute quickly began their sinister brand of mind games by leading their opponents to believe Aaron James was going to compete but he immediately tagged out. Enoch and Abel, and Sane and Wyatt Black squared off and continued their animosity. As The Institute were regrouping on the outside, the powerful Damien Abel grabbed Tony Sane and threw him flying over the top rope at their adversaries. While all the men were regrouping, seemingly preparing for a massive six man stand off, Sane out of nowhere intentionally speared Nate Steel betraying his team. The chaos allowed Aaron James and Wyatt Black to hit a ‘Kill Shot’/ running combination on Nate Steel to win. The Institute celebrated their victory on the outside, sending a clear visible message that they are now stronger than ever. Damien Abel took to the mic and reminded Aaron James that he is the number one contender and wants his match.
WVWF’s next show will take place on August 23rd at the Richardson Building located at 325 7th Street Parkersburg West Virginia. Fans will see the continuation of the tag team tournament, a six person mixed tag match between the Institute and Cease and Desist with Rikku St. Helen, and of course the Fabulous (and victorious) Phoebe Harper.
