Pro Wrestling Wire is saddened to report the passing of AWA veteran Nacho Barrera, a respected figure from the territory era of professional wrestling.

Barrera began his career in the early 1970s and went on to compete across multiple promotions throughout the United States, most notably the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and several Chicago-area circuits. Barrera stood across from some of the most iconic names in wrestling history.

Over the course of two decades, Barrera shared the ring with legends such as Curt Hennig, Rick Martel, Nick Bockwinkel, Stan Hansen, Baron Von Raschke, The Crusher, and Jim Brunzell. He also competed in memorable tag team encounters against the dominant Road Warriors. His career saw him tested by some of wrestling’s most intimidating figures, including Blackjack Mulligan and the notorious Bruiser Brody.

Perhaps one of Barrera’s most infamous appearances came in 1983, when he and Curtis Dean teamed up in a two-on-one handicap match against the surging Hulk Hogan. Despite their loss, the match placed Barrera in the spotlight at a pivotal moment in wrestling history as Hogan was on the rise to superstardom.

Even after stepping away from the ring in the early 1990s, Barrera remained fondly remembered by fans and peers. In 2025, his contributions to the sport were recognized when he was honored with the Latin Living Legends Award, celebrating his place in wrestling’s rich history.

Pro Wrestling Wire would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Nacho Barrera. His legacy as a tough competitor who shared the ring with some of wrestling’s greatest names will not be forgotten.
