Rollins appeared to injure his knee after an awkward landing on a springboard maneuver from the second rope. After a brief ringside consultation with Paul Heyman and the referee, Knight capitalized with a BFT to secure the win. What followed was an unplanned shift in the evening’s program.
Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer reported that the apparent injury forced WWE officials to scrap a planned segment that was scheduled for later in the show. “Seth is injured, appears to be serious,” Alvarez noted. “The last 40 minutes of the show were changed on the fly, and there was something that was supposed to happen later that didn’t as a result of the injury.”
Despite the apparent chaos backstage and reports pointing to the injury being legitimate, some uncertainty remains. Alvarez stated, “I was told it was legitimate. There are people that would be very upset if they found out it wasn’t legitimate, and I guess there are some people who are skeptical.”
Dave Meltzer added further intrigue on Wrestling Observer Radio, citing a trusted source who cautioned him against fully buying into the injury narrative. “Someone, who I one hundred percent trust, told me ‘Don’t go so strong on the idea that it’s real at all,’ because they pretty much heard about it on Thursday,” Meltzer explained. “Everyone thinks that it’s real… but it’s only one person who told me that, and it was someone to warn me. So who the hell knows?”
Regardless of its authenticity, the fallout backstage was very real. Meltzer confirmed that multiple sources backstage said the final 40 minutes of the show were rewritten in real time—an indication of just how disruptive Rollins’ situation was to WWE’s original plans.
In storyline, Rollins still has until next June to cash in a title opportunity, leaving a window open even if a long-term absence becomes necessary. However, WWE has yet to issue an official statement regarding his status, leaving fans and insiders to speculate.
